Iowa State University of Science and Technology, more commonly known as Iowa State University (ISU) is a public land grant and university space research to the issue in Ames, Iowa, USA. Iowa State is currently ranked by U.S. News & World Report as among the top 50 public universities and engineering schools in the United States. Iowa State has produced astronauts, scientists and the Nobel and Pulitzer Prize winners with a host of other eminent personalities in their respective areas. Until 1945 it was known as Iowa State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The university is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities, Universities Research Association, and the Big 12 Conference. In 1856, the Iowa General Assembly passed legislation to establish the State Agricultural College and model operation. Story County was chosen as the location on June 21, 1859, proposed by Johnson, Kossuth, Marshall, Polk and Story counties.When Iowa accepted the provisions of the Morrill Act of 1862, Iowa became the first institution in the country identified as a land grant college.
